Church of England School of the Resurrection

Belong, Believe, Achieve

Welcome to Year 1

Please click here to see our Year 1 Spring Term Curriculum

Year one has 29 pupils in the class and is taught by Mrs Barnes. Teaching and learning is supported by Miss Cooper  who work with small groups of children or individuals through the day. We also have Mrs Grundy who will work with small groups for additional support

We aim to build upon the knowledge and skills gained in Reception by providing them with a curriculum that is creative, exciting and engaging for all learners. In Year One we are trying to encourage children to become more independent in the way they think and learn, so please try to let your children organise themselves when they come in in the mornings.  Parental support makes a huge difference to your child’s education.  We are lucky to have such supportive parents at Church of England School of the Resurrection.  We would appreciate continued support and encouragement at home to reinforce the learning that is taking place in the classroom.

PE is on Tuesday and Thursday. We recommend that the children bring in their kit and keep it at school in their lockers so that it is ready for them. Weather permitting some of their lessons will be outside therefore pumps will be needed also.

Learning Logs: activities are given out every two weeks. Each task has three levels Bronze, Silver and Gold.  Children have 2 weeks to complete their task and return it on the date given. Children will be given a special award sticker to celebrate their efforts.

In addition to the Learning logs children will be given a Reading Book for daily reading practice which they must bring to school every day. When you read with your child please sign their Reading Record to show it has been done. Remember, books are changed weekly after they have been signed by the adult reading with the child. We encourage the children to read them three times, 1: To decode, 2: to increase fluency and 3: To be able to answer the questions and describe and summarise what they have read.

Children have also been given a SpellingMaths Passport and Big Maths Learn Its list for them to learn. At school we will give them the opportunity to show they can apply these maths facts in their work and if they can prove they can three times they will be able to move on to a new set of challenges. Spelling Lists and  activities are given weekly. They will be put into their blue books which are to be put in the homework box on Wednesday.  Spelling and Big Math tests happen every Thursday with new list given out on Friday.
