Our English follows a cycle, in which we look at different genres as a class, and then develop our writing skills by applying what we learn. We are leading a text based cycle, which will include a sequence of learning: Ready to Read (RR), Time with a Text (TT), Read and Write (RW) and Stop and Share (SS).  Within that, we will be learning to:

  • Read for decoding, read for understanding, read for enjoyment and read for research.
  • Read aloud with fluency and expression, using commas, question marks and exclamation marks to vary expression.
  • Write different kinds of sentences: statements, questions, exclamation marks and commands.
  • Use expanded noun phrases to add description and specification.
  • Write words in their full and contracted forms (do not = don't).
  • Use a range of suffixes to make words more interesting (-ful, -ment, -ly, -ness).
  • Use the correct use of verb tense.
  • Begin to use joined writing.

We will also be continuing to develop our phonics and spellings, linking this to handwriting, in which children will go to an allocated adult who will teach that child to their ability.
