Year 2 Curriculum Spring 2

  

 Mathematics

We will be learning to:

  • Compare and order numbers to 100.
  • Read and write all numbers to 100 in digits and words.
  • Recall and use multiplication and division facts for 2,3,5 and 10 tables.
  • Add and subtract 2 and 3 digit numbers.
  • Recognise and use inverse (+ and -).
  • Regonise, find and write 1/3, 1/4, 2/4 and 3/4 of a shape and number. 
  • Tell the time to 5 minutes, including quarter to and past.
  • Solve word problems. 

 

English

Our English follows a cycle, in which we look at different genres as a class, and then develop our writing skills by applying what we learn. Within that, we will be learning to:

  • Read aloud with fluency and expression, using commas, question marks and exclamation marks to vary expression.
  • Write different kinds of sentences: statements, questions, exclamation marks and commands. 
  • Use expanded noun phrases to add description and specification. 
  • Write words in their full and contracted forms (do not = don't).
  • Use a range of suffixes to make words more interesting (-ful, -ment, -ly, -ness).
  • Use the correct use of verb tense.
  • Begin to use joined writing. 

We will also be continuing to learn phonics and spellings, in which children will go to an allocated adult who will teach that child to their ability.

 

Science

Our current science topics look at material. 

 

We will be looking at:

  • things that squash, bend, twist and stretch
  • sorting materials
  • what things are made from
  • properties of materials

 

RE

This half term we will be looking at:

  • The Bible and other special books

 

PE

In Year 2, we do PE twice every week.

On a Tuesday we take part in a dance or gymnastics lesson. This half term we are expressing our creativity through dance.

On a Thursday, we have our PE session with Paco, our sports coach. These sessions will look at technique, agility, sporting methods and different games.

Children need to make sure they have their PE kits in school on these days, and everyone needs pumps or trainers for outdoor PE.

 

Computing

 

This half term we will be using Scratch to program a sprite to move around the screen.

The children will have a clear understanding of algorithms as a set of instructions.  They will be able to debug programs.  They will be able to predict and convert simple algorithms to programs.

Creative Learning

 Our current Geography topic is: 

  • The seasons.

We will be looking at:

  • the United Kingdom.
  • seasonal changes 
  • the weather

 

Art

This term, Year 2 will be concentrating on the artist Alma Woodsey Thomas and her designs.

 

We are also looking at the use of colour and line using different mediums as our skills focus this term.

 

Music

This year, Year 2 will be working with a peripatetic teacher to learn how to play the recorder.
